Will We See Another Blade Runner Film Someday?

I spent a good part of the weekend watching Blade Runner – The Final Cut, which was released on DVD in 2007 and is considered the definitive version of that film. If you’ve been a fan of Blade Runner since its initial release in 1982, or just recently discovered it, I highly encourage you to revisit it via The Final Cut. All of the changes and enhancements were personally supervised by director, Ridley Scott, and it includes commentary tracks by Scott and “visual futurist” Syd Mead.

Lo and behold, the day after I watched it, I see an article on IndieWire in which Rutger Hauer says he would like to see Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, 2008) direct another Blade Runner movie. Hauer isn’t alone in that sentiment. Of all the major directors today, Nolan is considered by many to be the perfect choice to continue the Blade Runner saga.

Here’s what Hauer had to say about Nolan:

“If Christopher Nolan would be on it I’d say, ‘All right, go for it!’ But otherwise you can’t do it. Blade Runner is such a unique film. How do you describe a diamond? I don’t think you should ever touch it again.”

And in case you’re wondering if Nolan would be interested in expanding on the world that Scott and company created, check out this quote from Nolan, – also from the article:

“I was so struck by Blade Runner when I saw it and when I look at this film again, I think there’s so much concern with memory and identity that I carry over from that film, because it just made such an incredible impression on me.”

I have a feeling that the possibility of Christopher Nolan helming a new Blade Runner installment is going to be a huge topic in filmdom over the next few years.
