How to Build A Nuclear Submarine – Documentary

Sub

I never pondered all that went into constructing a modern, high-tech submarine, but after watching this video I realize the enormity of the project. As one Royal Navy officer puts it – “Its like a 7,000 ton Swiss watch.” Check out this one hour BBC video to witness the fourteen years of design and construction of the nuclear submarine “Astute”.

Guiana Space Center (2007) - Vincent Fournier

While the science and technology of space exploration is complex and hard to comprehend sometimes, the sheer beauty of it is astounding. French photographer, Vincent Fournier has made it his life’s work to capture images of space programs around the world and document them in his book The Final Frontier. I love the stark beauty in his photos of machines, space-related equipment and man-made structures. These images are from his book, and others can be found at Core 77.

Racer Builds Working Batmobile Replica

I’m amazed at the level of detail this racecar driver and builder, Casey Putsch, put into this machine. Not only did he make the exterior look nearly identical to the Batmobile in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, he even used a turbine engine from a Navy helicopter. According to the article from Wired.com, Putsch claims the car drives about as well as his Dodge Viper. Only one drawback to this sweet ride – it inhales fuel at a rate of 4 to 8 miles per gallon.

Wonderful Video on Creativity

The website, Brain Pickings, is a great resource for intelligent, thought-provoking articles and videos. On a recent visit to the site, I saw this short clip and it’s now one of my favorites. It dispels the myth that creative breakthroughs happen overnight and shows how every innovation is built upon the work of previous inventors and researchers. Kudos to Kirby Ferguson for all his work on this fascinating project.
